Description:

INTRODUCTION
International trade involves the exchange of goods and services between different countries. It helps countries expand their markets, use resources effectively, and improve economic growth. At the same time, international trade involves different currencies, laws, customs procedures, taxes, and business practices. These differences can create difficulties for companies and countries involved in cross-border trade.International organizations help reduce these difficulties by creating common rules, supporting cooperation, and providing guidance to countries. The World Trade Organization (WTO) supports trade agreements and helps settle trade disputes. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provides financial support and advice to countries facing economic problems. The World Bank supports developing countries through infrastructure and development projects, while UNCTAD works to improve the participation of developing countries in international trade. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) also supports businesses through common trade rules and dispute resolution mechanisms. These organizations help create a more organized and predictable trading environment. They support the reduction of trade barriers, encourage cooperation, and help countries participate more effectively in global markets.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
  • To explore the role of major international organizations in shaping global trade policies.
  • To examine the mechanisms used by international organizations to resolve trade disputes.
  • To understand how these organizations support international trade liberalization.
  • To assess their impact on trade in developing and developed countries.
  • To identify the major challenges faced by international organizations in the changing trade environment.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
India has increased its participation in global trade through initiatives such as the Foreign Trade Policy, Make in India, and the Production Linked Incentive scheme. Despite these efforts, Indian exporters continue to face challenges such as dependence on limited export markets, low value addition, inadequate trade infrastructure, and skill gaps. Many Indian businesses, particularly MSMEs, also face difficulties in meeting international quality standards, adopting digital tools, and following sustainable business practices. Procedural delays and limited awareness of international trade requirements can further reduce their competitiveness. The study examines how international organizations can help address these challenges by supporting common trade rules, reducing trade barriers, resolving disputes and providing assistance to developing economies. It also considers the need for stronger institutional support to help Indian businesses participate more effectively in international markets.
